Production Files documenting the 1998 production of Warren Leight's Side Man in Roundabout Theatre Company's Criterion Center Stage Right. The play won Tony awards for best play and best featured actor (Frank Wood) and was nominated for several Drama Desk awards. The production transfered to a commercial Broadway run at the John Golden Theatre produced by Weissberger Theater Group.
Directed by Michael Mayer with set design by Neil Patel, costume design by Tom Broecker, lighting design by Kenneth Posner, sound design by Ray Schilke and hair and wig design by Bobby H. Grayson.
The production starred Robert Sella as Clifford, Wendy Makkena as Terry, Angelica Torn as Patsy, Frank Wood as Gene, Joseph Lyle Taylor as Al, Michael Mastro as Ziggy and Kevin Geer as Jonesy. Understudies: Geoffrey P. Cantor, Jeff Binder and Marissa Matrone. The Weissberger transfer starred Christian Slater as Clifford.
Side Man tells the story of "side man" musician at the end of the 1950s Big Band era, loosely based on Warren Leight's father and the effects of his musical career on his wife and family. Produced Off Broadway at New York's Classic Stage Company, the production transferred to Roundabout's stage and then transferred commercially by the Weissberger Theatre Group. The play won the 1999 Tony award for best new play, with Warren Leight receiving Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations for the new work.
