Anna Christie was staged at Roundabout's Criterion Center Stage Right with its first preview on December 23, 1992. Anna Christie was the first of many productions for which Roundabout, in its second season on Broadway, received critical acclaim, winning the 1993 Tony Award for Best Revival and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Play. Critics focused on the fierce portrayals of Anna and Mat and the undeniable chemistry between the lead actors, Natasha Richardson and Liam Neeson.
Directed by David Leveaux with sets designed by John Lee Beatty, costumes designed by Martin Pakledinaz, lighting designed by Marc B. Weiss and sound designed by Douglas J. Cuomo. Liam Neeson played the part of Mat Burke, Natasha Richardson played the part of Anna Christopherson, Rip Torn played the part of Chris Christopherson, Anne Meara played the part of Marthy Owen, Barton Tinapp played the part of Larry, and Christopher Wynkoop played the part of Johnny the Priest.
Anna Christie debuted in New York in 1921 at the Vanderbilt Theatre and earned Eugene O'Neill the 1922 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Played primarily on a barge, the play centers on Anna, a former prostitute who, against the wishes of her father with whom she has recently reunited, falls in love with a ship stoker. Both Anna and her beloved must come to terms with her past.
