Tennessee William's third play, The Glass Menagerie, opened on Broadway in 1945 to nearly unanonymous critical praise, winning the Drama Critics' Circle Award and earning countless other accolades. The play was seen as a turning point in American theatre, and Williams viewed as an important new voice in drama. Laurette Taylor, who played the original Amanda Wingfield, stunned audiences with her realistic interpretation of the pitiful Southern belle mother who, along with the rest of the cast, was modeled after Williams' dysfunctional family.
