White Liars and Black Comedy were produced together in Roundabout's second season on Broadway at the Criterion Center Stage Right. Written by Peter Shaffer and directed by Gerald Gutierrez, Nancy Marchard played Sophie/Miss Furnival, Peter MacNicol played Frank/Brindsley Miller, David Aaron Baker played Tom, Anne Bobby played Carol Melkett, Keene Curtis played Colonel Melkett, Brian Murray played Harold Gorringe, Robert Stattel played Schuppanzigh, Kate Mulgrew played Clea, and Ray Xifo played Georg Bamberger. Nancy Marchard earned a Tony award nomation for her portrayal of Miss Furnival.

Sets were designed by John Lee Beatty, costumes designed by Jess Goldstein, lighting design by Craig Miller, sound design by Douglas J. Cuomo and hair and wigs by David H. Lawrence.

 

White Liars and Black Comedy are two separate plays written by Peter Shaffer, often performed together. White Liars, written in 1967, was originally titled "White Lies" and was meant to be played with Shaffer's other one act play, Black Comedy, written in 1965. White Liars underwent several rewrites before settling on the script now in use.  

Production files include management/administration documentation but lack prompt script and all creative materials (i.e., director's notes; set, costume, lighting and sound designs) used during the run. Collection does contain artistic memos, author's agreement, playbill, opening night documents, correspondence, house seats, press, and education study guide.
