Earning William Inge a Pulitzer Prize in 1953, Picnic provides a unique view of women's limitations in 1950s small town America. All of the female characters are hampered in by societal demands and each acts out in her own way. Issues of beauty vs. intelligence, loneliness, longing, and societal pressures inform the action of the men and women in the play.

The play originally premiered at the Music Box Theatre in New York City and has since had numerous productions and adaptations on stage and film.
Production files consist of one box with 10 folders detailing the management of the show with author's agreement, extensive press clippings, set bids, playbill, education study guide, and other aspects of the production.
