Set in artistocratic 18th century France and based on the 1782 novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, Les Liaisons Dangereuses is the story of the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, two rivals and former lovers, who use seduction as a weapon in an elaborate game of dominance and ultimately degradation.  Part-bet and part-challenge, Valmont determines to seduce the virtuous Madame de Tourvel, while the Marquise de Merteuil sets out to corrupt the virginal young Cécile de Volanges, who is betrothed to Merteuil's ex-lover; their elaborate sexual schemes and machinations, some successful and some not, ultimately turn on them to the destruction of all involved.

Christopher Hampton's adaptation of the novel premiered in London's West End in 1986, and on Broadway in 1987 with the same stars, Alan Rickman as Valmont and Lindsay Duncan as Merteuil.
